Featured Band Member-January 2004
Gareth Sutherland
 Our first honoree for Featured Band Member for the new year, 2004 is Gareth Sutherland.
Gareth is 13 years old and the drums have been a HUGE part of his life for the past three years. In addition to performing on both tenor and snare drums in Greater Trenton Pipes and Drums, Gareth is also an important member of the percussion section of the 7th and 8th Grade Band at Timberlane Middle School in Hopewell, New Jersey, where he is a 7th grade student.
Gareth not only excels in the music arena but is also a fine athlete as well. He is on the cross country team at school and also plays recreational soccer in the Fall and indoor soccer in the Winter.
Also, Gareth does Agility when he can with his Whippet Fly. Gareth's family is involved with dog handling as well. He has competed in junior handler events with Kizzy, the family Border Collie. Together, they have competed at the USDAA nationals in the Junior Handler showcase, where Gareth was interviewed by “Animal Planet”.
Gareth's drum instruction with Greater Trenton has been through Drum Sergeant, Mike Schillaci and Cindy Crowder, tenor drum instructor. At the moment, he has no plans to compete with his drumming but does have in mind what he would like to do as a profession when he grows up. He would like to become a construction worker; one that only works Spring, Summer and Fall. Thereby, leaving Winter open for lots of drumming!
